Rothko’s majestic ‘No. 4 (Two Dominants) [Orange, Plum, Black]’ marked a turning point for the artist, when he began to use layers of pigment to create depth and drama like never before. Painted in 1951 and shown at Betty Parsons Gallery that same year, the painting then appeared at MoMA’s ‘15 Americans’ show in 1952 alongside works by Jackson Pollock and Clyfford Still.
